Some films are ageless, some are classics and some are landmarks. ‘Sholay’ is one film that enjoys all the filmy adjectives that defines Hindi cinema as ‘Pre-Sholay’ and ‘Post-Sholay’. ‘Sholay’, which was released on 15th August 1975, initially received a lukewarm response at the box-office. The film which was all set to be labeled a colossal flop started picking up in the third week of its release. By the time it entered the fourth week the ‘House-Full’ sign boards were all over the ticket counters as the film went on to smash all box-office collection records beating Ashok Kumar’s ‘Kismet’ released in 1943. ‘Sholay’ not only became an all time cult classic but also made every scene, character and dialogue written by Salim - Javed immortal. It was something that the audience had never seen before, especially ‘Gabbar Singh’ who went on to become the most dreaded villain of the silver screen. The casting was perfect, the writing was perfect, the songs were perfect as well as Ramesh Sippy’s direction.
