If Indian cinema has ever witnessed the greatest ever iconic romantic film in its 102-year history, then it’s got to be Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. Any film that has gained all-time cult status after ‘Sholay’, it’s ‘DDLJ’. The film which released on the 20th October in 1995 was one of the biggies to release that Diwali along with David Dhawan’s ‘Yaarana’ which had Rishi Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Raj Babbar. ‘DDLJ’ opened to packed houses as it had the Yash Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan stamp on it. Yash Chopra’s son Aditya Chopra who was closely associated with his father during the making of ‘Darr’ in 1993 had already struck a rapport with Shah Rukh Khan and decided to make his directorial debut with him. Kajol has already tasted success with Yashraj’s ‘Yeh Dillagi’ that released in 1994. Aditya Chopra wrote the script along with Honey Irani and Javed Siddiqui and ‘DDLJ’ was born. Adi opted for the upcoming Jatin-Lalit instead of the regular Shiv-Hari who had given music to all Yashraj films since ‘Silsila’. It was a start to finish schedule for the film from September 1994 to August 1995. The film released on schedule and went on to become the highest grosser of all times in Indian cinema. It went on to win the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and 10 Filmfare awards for - Best Film - Yash Chopra, Best Director - Aditya Chopra, Best Actor - Shah Rukh Khan, Best Actress - Kajol, Best Supporting Actress - Farida Jalal, Best Performance in a Comic Role - Anupam Kher, Best Lyricist - Anand Bakshi ("Tujhe Dekha To"), Best Screenplay - Aditya Chopra, Best Dialogue - Aditya Chopra & Javed Siddiqui, Best Male Playback Singer - Udit Narayan ("Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna"). Music directors Jatin-Lalit lost the award that year to A.R. Rahman’s ‘Rangeela'. The ‘DDLJ’ soundtrack album had 7 songs which became one of the most popular albums of that year and continues to be till date. Raj and Simran became household names and Europe became the world’s best holiday destination after the release of the film. Let’s look into some of the links which make the film still so fresh and young even after 20 years of its release.
