Christmas releases in Malayalam Film Industry is less than a week away and being the last festival season of 2017, Mollywood box office is highly anticipating all the release. So far, there are five sure releases for this Christmas. This includes two of the most anticipated movie of the second half of 2017, namely, Mammootty starrer Masterpiece and Jayasurya starrer Aadu 2. With all the hype, expectations and pressure of being a festive season release, all these Malayalam movies have huge stakes on their head, especially with Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai also being in the race to top the box office collection charts during this holiday season. Here we are looking at each of the five Malayalam releases and making a prediction on how will they fare in the upcoming clash at Box Office.
Note: Pycker BO Prediction Meter score is based on various factors and indicates the chances of the movie to be a Christmas blockbuster and make the top spot to its name.
1. Masterpiece: Release – Dec 21
Mammootty hadn’t had an all kind of audience pleasing movie in a long time. Though The Great Father was a huge relief for the Megastar and his fans, but it wasn’t enough to solidify the shaking chair of Mammootty at the BO. Thus, AjaiVasudev directed Masterpiece, which is sure to be an in-and-out mass entertainer, has a lot at stake. Fans of the star are expecting a powerhouse movie which will be as thoroughly an entertainer as Pulimurugan. And anything less than that will negatively affect the film at the box office. Considering the movie to be the biggest Malayalam release of Christmas 2017, the movie needs to gain huge ground and a full on positive Day 1 to take the box-office’s top spot for itself. But, the biggest challenge for the movie is the director’s previous movie, Rajadhiraja, which was just an average mass entertainer. And, going by the Masterpiece trailer, teaser and songs, it seems that Ajai hasn’t gained a lot of ground from his first film. Surely, the movie will have its moment for fans, but will that be enough for the general audience is the million dollar question.
Aadu2: Release – Dec 22
By far, Aadu 2 is easily the most awaited movie under Jayasurya filmography. In fact this Midhun Manuel Thomas movie might be the first Malayalam film to get a sequel even after the first part bombing at the box office. Having a fan base cross the star lines, will be the biggest advantage for this comedy satire, when it hits the screens on Friday, the 22nd of December. Having a cult following, lower production cost and the genre provides higher chances for the film to be a hit at the box office. But will that be enough for it to claim the top spot at the BO, is still a question. One thing that can dismantle all the positives for the film, is it taking itself too seriously. Aadu gained a lot of popularity because it never took itself or any of its character seriously, which is a must need for the films in this genre. But, to satisfy the huge expectation, if Midhun makes the characters and the storyline more ‘mass’ instead of ‘comic’, that will turn out to be a big bummer. The trailer and the songs do give a hint of this. Yet, one can be assured that there will be enough to ROFL.
Vimanam: Release – Dec 22
Pradeep M Nair directed Vimanam is hugely banking on the star value of Prithviraj, mainly because the movie doesn’t fall under the type of films that usually books a festive season opening slot at the Malayalam box office. Being an inspirational movie, based on true events and people, Vimanam is sure to have another career best performance from Prithvi and that will surely be the post-release highlight of the movie. Yet, the biggest challenge for the movie is that its main competitors are a much hyped mass-entertainer and a most awaited comedy satire. And if both these movies are able to deliver decently to the audience, then Vimanam will find itself in a tight spot to make a big flight at the BO. Still, one can’t under-estimate the popularity of Prithvi among the family audience and the film is sure to gain a lot of ground even if the initial reports are mostly positive. This will help the movie to have slow but steady long run in theaters in Kerala. In fact, this film’s performance at the BO is directly proportional to the performance of the other two big releases of Malayalam. Overall, this film has potential to be a hit, over a period of few weeks, but chances are very low that it will take away the top spot.
Mayaanadhi: Release – Dec 22
Mayaanadhi has lot of big weights behind the screen, namely, Aashiq Abu, AmalNeerad and ShyamPushkar. With Tovino Thomas in the lead, Mayaandhi trailer made it sure that just like any other Aashiq Abu movie, this has a lot more to offer and to comprehend from what can be given out in the trailer. The treatment of the movie, from the really melodious songs and the trailer, seems to be more of a realistic one than of a cinematic exaggeration. Going by the trailer, this movie, based on an AmalNeerad story, is a blend of both romance and mystery genres. Though not a lot can be made out of the trailer about the storyline, one thing is for sure, the story will have a lot of importance over to the star names behind and in front of the camera. An intriguing trailer, mesmerizing songs and brand Aashiq Abu are the major highlights of the film. But, it proves to be a challenge to understand for the common audience, then the fate of the movie will be in air, as this sort of movies aren’t generally a holiday release. We can’t be sure that the movie will have glorious opening weekend at the BO, but can turn out to be the black horse among this year’s Christmas box office race in Mollywood.
AanaAlaraloduAlaral: Release – Dec 22
With VineethSreenivasan and AnuSithara in the lead, AanaAlaralodu is the least hyped release of this Christmas in Malayalam film industry. It clearly is a comedy entertainer but doesn’t carry the heavy weight to climb to the top of the BO chart, this season. This depends on how much the movie is not head over heels about its characters. This is not at all a mega movie and the treatment should follow suit. This much said, nothing so far about this movie gives a hint that it can blind side its competitors and turn around the table in its favor. Advantages for the movie is that it is a very low budget movie with close to zero expectation and the release during a festive season can give it enough at the ticket counters that it can turn out to be a profitable venture for the bankrollers. Also, there is no hint whatsoever to conclude that this Dileep Menon directorial might turn out to be another Kunjiramayanam though it can be an easy go watch venture.
