When it comes to remakes, the viewers always have unlimited complains. The idea of REMAKE is not new, the debate regarding it is also old. However, the cinematic universe has always got inspired by one another and thus, remakes have been a part of every film industry, even Hollywood.
There is no harm in adapting an interesting piece from world cinema to suit the taste and culture of a specific region, in this case India. This is no easy task for a filmmaker who aims to deliver a culturally-modified film without compromising the quality. Thus, remake films deserve to be judged by its own merit only.
We can’t deny the fact that remakes are bound to face comparison. But, remakes not always have to be inferior to the original. It must not be the frame to frame copy of the original as well.
Good remakes retain the original flavor but still look refreshing and relevant in our society. A perfect example would be 2008 film Shaurya which despite being a remake of Hollywood classic A Few Good Men (1992) was deeply rooted in Indian system. Sangharsh (1999), remake of Silence of The Lambs (1991) also stood out for being quintessentialy Indian.
Not only Shaurya or Sangharsh, there are more examples of fine remakes in Bollywood. Here is a list of Bollywood remakes of foreign movies which are actually good. Check out the album and add the films in your must watch list if you haven’t watched them yet.
