Horror movies in Telugu are rare and far between since the beginning until the 1980s. The success of Tamil Dubbed horror movie Chandramukhi paved way for numerous movies with horror elements blended with comedy. Pure Telugu horror movies trace their origin to Bhayam Bhayam starring Sarath Babu in 1986. In the 1960s, Antasthulu has a spirit singing a haunting song. In the later 1970s, Vittalacharya directed Jaganmohini, a comedy horror became an industry hit. He followed it up with Gandharva Kanya. 

But it was not until Ram Gopal Varma's Raatri, horror as a genre in Telugu films evolved to be a mainstream genre. Deyyam in the mid-90s proved to be a cult film. Arundhati in 2009 made horror a viable genre in Telugu Film Industry by becoming a landmark film post-2000.
