India's Best Movie of the Week
Among the 6 major film industries, all had come up with at least one release this week. Surprisingly, the biggest of them all, Bollywood had only two releases and Bengali had one. And Tamil had four, Malayalam had six out of which three carried buzz. Just like the previous few weeks, Kannada Cinema has 6 releases out of which 2 are major films with a buzz.
Among the 14 major releases this week, highly anticipated Hindi epic drama Panipat has been getting mixed reviews and did not elicit the reception that an Ashutosh Gowariker film usually receives. Meanwhile, Pati Patni Aur Woh made up for some wholesome entertainment and ended as a delightful watch by making it palatable for the new gen audience. Bengali film Sagardipey Jawker Dhan looked quite impressive. Looking at Kannada, Katha Sangama and Alidu Ulidavaru were well-received. The two Telugu releases 90 ML and Aswamedham managed average to poor reviews.
Among the Tamil releases, Kathir's Jada had picqued some interest, considering the lead actor's earlier choice of films, but ended up as a dud. Dhanusu Raasi Neyargale and Iruttu received average reviews. Irandam Ulaga Porin Kadaisi Gundu has impressed critics as it is a well-intentioned film, shedding light on many issues plaguing the society especially the premise of nuclear waste disposal being an untouched topic especially in Indian cinema.
Among Malayalam films, Chola had already made it big by getting screenings at many international film festivals. The film has the signature Sanal Kumar Sasidharan style of making it gripping despite the slow pace. Udalazham too had screenings at major film festivals. Thakkol had received average reviews from critics.
Looking at the film Chola that released in film festivals much earlier, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan presents a disturbing film that makes you waiting for the most horrible to happen at any time. With two terrific actors like Nimisha and Joju on board and with stunning camera work by Ajith Acharya makes the slow-paced film quite thrilling. No marks for guessing why Nimisha and Joju George won state awards for their roles.
The premise of a young person feeling insecure in the presence of a stranger and an unreliable friend/boyfriend/relative and the mental turmoils that a girl goes through is a familiar scenario that finds place in our everyday life. With all the recent happenings around us, Chola acts as a cautionary tale. The brilliance of the director and the actors in portraying the trauma convincingly make us say that
Chola is Pycker India's Best Movie of the Week.
Give a big hand to director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan and his team which includes Nimisha Sajayan and Joju George. Thanks for an essential film.

Recommendation: Irandam Ulaga Porin Kadaisi Gundu is surely worth a watch due to the unexplored premise of nuclear waste in Indian cinema.
