The year 2018 is clearly a mixed bag for most of the Mollywood actors. Apart from the surprise entries for the best actors, the year clearly belonged to the youngsters.
Among the younger crop, there were brilliant performances from the ever-reliable Fahadh Faasil and Jayasurya. We cannot stop praising Fahadh Faasil as he had been giving stellar performances in all three of his movies- Carbon, Varathan and Njan Prakashan that released this year. As for Jayasurya, there is not an iota of doubt as regard to the flexibility that he is capable of. His down-played performance as footballer Sathyan in Captain and his portrayal of a transsexual in Njan Marykutty, is pitch perfect. Nivin Pauly as the agile Kochunni in the local Robinhood movie Kayamkulam Kochunni and Tovino Thomas as the vulnerable Ajayan in Oru Kuprasidha Payyan were testament to the fact that age or experience does not reflect an actor's caliber. Shane Nigam as the distraught Anand in Eeda and Antony Varghese as the Jacob in Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil were stupendous too and were worth mentioning for their impeccable performances.
Malayalam Cinema has seen some incredible performances from actors who had been in the industry for long but had been so under-utilised. Indrans was pre-dominantly a comedy artist in most of his previous films and his transformation to a helpless father in search of his lost son in Aalorukkam has been nothing but astounding and no wonder that the state award beckoned him. Joju George as the retired officer Joseph can surely be one of the contenders for the following year's Best Actor Award.
Among the senior artists, we have the pride of Mollywood, our own Lalettan who still reigns supremacy with his versatility as he gives a controlled performance as Odiyan Manickyan in Odiyan.
