Undoubtedly, sports drama movies are the best Bollywood movies of 2016. Aamir Khan starrer Dangal and Salman Khan starrer Sultan had the perfect mix of star power and women empowerment that made them blockbusters not only in India but in abroad too including China, United Kingdom, etc. Apart from bagging a National award, Dangal is one of the highest grossing Indian films ever. Sultan is an emotional story, which is one of the highest grossing Bollywood films of all time.
Sushant Singh Rajput played the role of former Indian Cricket team captain M.S. Dhoni in the latter's biographical sports drama movie, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and his acting was praised. The film was a critical and commercial success making it one of the highest grossing films of Bollywood movies of 2016. Emraan Hashmi portrayed the role of former Indian cricket team captain Mohammad Azharuddin in Azhar that did a moderate business at the box office.
Shah Rukh Khan acted in the thriller Fan, which was a treat to his fans as he appeared in a double role. Akshay Kumar chose a period thriller Rustom that bagged him a National award. Airlift and Housefull 3 were also loved by the audience. Sonam Kapoor starred in Neerja, a movie on real-life incidents of Neerja Bhanot, who showed courage and self-sacrifice to save 359 lives, which made Sonam win a National award.
Amitabh Bachchan stole the show as a lawyer in a courtroom drama movie Pink, that won National award for Best Film on Social Issues. Apart from this, Bachchan worked in Wazir and TE3N. Among action movies, Baaghi and Dishoom made a good business when compared to Force 2, R.Madhavan starrer Saala Khadoos and Shivaay. Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab threw light on the illegal drug business in Punjab, which opened to mixed critics.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Sarbjit, as well as Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt starrer Dear Zindagi struck a chord with the audience. Among romantic movies, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Kapoor & Sons, Ki & Ka, and Befikre made a good business when compared to Sanam Re and Sanam Teri Kasam.
