  • Mere Pyare Prime Minister

Mere Pyaare Prime Minister is the third film in as many years about the problem of open defecation but turned out the best of the lot. It tells the story of a little boy Kunhu who writes to the Prime Minister of India about the problems faced by slum dwellers, especially women, due to the lack of toilet facilities. Anjali Patil excellences in the role of a single mother of the protagonist and Om Kanojiya as the little boy. A genuinely heartwarming film not to be missed. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's direction is spot on.

  • Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota

It is a wonder that Mars Ki Dard Nabi Hota went without a trace at the box office. This satirical take on Bollywood’s action films of the late 1990s won international acclaim and is loved by those few who are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of it. There was a theatrical release problem for this film for reasons unknown and failed to gain a wider release. Leaving that aside, Abhimanyu Dassani rocked as the protagonist with an insensitivity towards pain and Radhika Madan as an action heroine excelled. Mahesh Manjrekar won high applause from the critics. Don’t miss this beauty if it is available for watching. Be warned that you’ll suffer from stomachache laughing like hell.

  • Photograph

One more film that failed at the box office but one more good film missed by a wider section of the audience. Photograph directed by Ritesh Batra tells the unlikely love story of a street photographer and a gloomy nerd of a girl who is pursuing a career in accounting. A charming film set in the backdrop of Mumbai has the city as a character in the film itself. Photograph may not appeal to everyone. But this slow-moving romance film will be a rewarding watch for those who like this type of films. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra played the lead roles. Farrukh Jaffar received applause for her performance as Nawazuddin's grandmother in this movie.

  • Sonchiriya

Ah, Sonchiriya! Box office failure doesn’t always mean a film is a flop with the audience too. Sonchiriya clicked immediately with the audience (those little numbers who attended) and the critics but failed to gain the attention of the wider viewership. But still, the movie which tells the story of an outlaw group and their vow to save the eponymous Sonchiriya to redeem themselves became an instant classic with movie buffs. Some of the noted critics called this film India’s answer to Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch. Manoj Bajpayee, Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Ranvir Shorey, and Ashutosh Rana started in this Abhishek Chaubey directorial.
