Pandemic or not, lockdown or not, OTT Release or theatrical release... one thing doesn’t change. An actor has to act. And put up a commendable show to gain appreciation. Telugu cinema which started the year with a bang has seen an impressive line up of performances from our stars. And as an added bonus, youngsters got proper exposure this year thanks to OTTs and direct releases. Satya Dev who till now has been a talented actor has become a superstar of small budget films.
New talents like Siddhu Jonnalagadda, Anand Deverakonda etc. emerged and made a mark on the Tollywood scene with their performances. As the year is coming to an end, we have picked up 6 of the best performances of the year (irrespective of the type of release) and pitted them against each other. Let’s see who will emerge as the best Telugu actor of the year.
1. Vishwaksen in Hit
HIT: The First Case is an amazingly made and competently narrated police procedural which is unlike anything we have seen in Telugu Cinema. Our review of the film even compared it to the best of Scandinavian thrillers. The characterisation of the protagonist is right out of Jo Nesbø and other best of Scandinavian thriller writers. Such a great character (the film has its own issues but they don’t undermine the lead actor’s characterisation and performance) is carried out with equal aplomb by Vishwaksen.
2. Naveen Chandra in Bhanumathi & Ramakrishna
As a thirty-something man who’s out of his small small-town world, Naveen Chandra fitted the role of Ramakrishna in this much acclaimed romantic comedy. As our reviews says: He has displayed a range of emotions as required by his role and is perfect as Ramakrishna.
3. Suhaas in Colour Photo
Known for his works on YouTube and other online media, this internet phenomenon started to gain recognition as a good talent in films like Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya. Colour Photo saw this ultra talented actor rise a step in his career to play the lead role. And boy! What a performance he delivered as Jaya Krishna, a youngster with golden heart but black skin tone which becomes a big hindrance for his love story. No. Just go and watch. If your eyes don't get wet by the end of this film, I’ll retire my pen. Such was an impact he created.
4. Sudheer Babu in V the Movie
Sudheer Babu may be an odd entry but to steal the show from Natural Star Nani in his own star vehicle is no small feat. Sudheer did this both physically and with his improved histrionics. He might not have bested Nani everywhere but he punched above his weight certainly.
5. Satya Dev in Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya
To trump Fahaadh Faasil with his performance in this epic remake of the much celebrated Malayalam instant classic Maheshinte Pratheekaram, Satya Dev needs to punch above his weight. He’s an obviously big talent. But that he proved he could make us forget Fahaadh with his performance (of course comparisons are inevitable) by the end of the film Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya is enough to say he deserves to be in this list.
6. Ravi Teja in Disco Raja
No. This is no odd entry. Ravi Teja was at his best in Disco Raja. He has given it his all. That might not have saved this ‘oddly great concept that flattered to deceive in the end’, he proved that his spark hasn’t faded away despite multiple failures. Good times are certainly ahead for this veteran mass hero. And it’s good for Telugu Cinema - for no other South Indian film industry boasts of a star who owned his own genre. Ravi Teja movie.
Best Telugu Actor of the Year 2020 in Telugu Cinema
So, considering various factors that include histrionics, enthusiasm in owning the role, energy shown on the screen, making the audience feel for the character, and above all... all round performance - Suhas is the best actor of the year just inching ahead of Satya Dev and Vishwaksen.
