When Chiranjeevi was transforming from Supreme Hero to Mega Star, Balakrishna was becoming Yuva Ratna. During the late 1980s and the early 1990s, Chiru and Balayya were one upping each other with their films. If Chiru scored a box office milestone, Balakrishna used to improve upon it. Then it comes as Chiranjeevi turn to one up the records of the Nandamuri scion. It has happened till Chudalani Undi, Samara Simha Reddy, Narasimha Naidu and Indra.
Though later their rivalry fizzled off a bit, it is a storied chapter in the history of Telugu Cinema. Now it appears that NBK has one upped Chiru after a long gap. If you observe the getup and looks of Balayya in NBK106 teaser, you may feel it’s right out of Balayya-Boyapati school of films. But eagle eyed fans found that the Panchekattu of Balakrishna reminds us openly of Mohanlal’s in Mollywood blockbuster Lucifer.
We all know that Chiru is remaking that film with Saaho fame Sujeeth. He may even reprise the dressing style of Mohanlal in the film. But now Balayya has not just appeared in the style but stole the thunder from Chiru. The look too suited Balayya’s ferocious intensity organically. It’d be great if their friendly rivalry drives into another decade.
