Ghantasala Sai Srinivas aka Thaman is known for his outstanding music which elevated several films. His latest film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo is a classic example of that. He is rated as one of the top music directors of South Indian Cinema but his life is not as fancy as it looks. He went through lots of ups and downs in both his personal and professional lives. With a lot of hurdles in between, Thaman has successfully completed 10 years in Tollywood. We take a look at some of the moments in his career.

The First BIG Strike(s):

9 out of 10 Telugu cinema fans would answer that Thaman’s debut movie as a music director is Kick (2009). Though it is not his first film, many believe the same. Though Thaman worked on a couple of films before Kick, it is this Surender Reddy film that put Thaman in the limelight. Thaman’s music is one of the major highlights of this blockbuster movie.

He grabbed offers from the top stars but the onus was on him to prove his worth and their belief on a newcomer. With Brindavanam, he worked with one of the top stars of Tollywood - Jr NTR. Thaman has delivered big time with this movie so much so that he became the go-to man for all the big stars of Tollywood. His next big hit was Dookudu which made him one of the top music directors of South Indian cinema and he worked for almost a dozen films in the next 2 years.

He also became the first choice for filmmakers for composing background music for their films. If he is busy with multiple projects, they would rope him in just for the background score. Such is his track record in background music irrespective of the songs. He is considered the next best after the legendary Mani Sharma.

The Trolls, The Downfall, and The Hatred:

As Thaman started to work on more and more films, the pressure on him increased. To be frank, his music became monotonous as he started repeating actors, and directors. On top of that, he admitted that some of the directors and producers used to put pressure on him to copy good songs. Like many other music directors in the Indian Cinema, Thaman used to copy (get inspiration from) other language movie songs. This has been happening over the years but with the popularity of social networks, Thaman became a troll material. But Thaman has a valid and logical explanation here. In one of the interviews, he said: “If I am able to deliver 5 super hit songs in an album, what is the need for me to copy the 6th song?”.

The Solid Comeback:

Though Thaman was being mercilessly trolled he kept delivering some blockbuster albums like Race Gurram, Kick 2, Sarrainodu every now and then. But with just one hit per year, his career seemed to be at the fag end. Top heroes started to ignore him, but for the workaholic he is, Thaman accepted medium budget movies as well. But the year 2018 turned the tables around for the talented music director.

Tholi Prema - a medium budget love story starring Varun Tej and Raashi Khanna in the lead roles is a huge milestone in Thaman’s career. Every song of the film and every single note he used for the film’s background score is so perfect. Be it the melodious Ninnila or the pleasant Allasaani Vaari Padhyamaa, he nailed every song in the movie and announced his comeback in style.

His next big film Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava showcased his potential of handling the music of big-ticket films. Though the songs of ASVR are not as popular as AVPL, the background music of Aravinda Sametha is astonishing. The tone of the film is completely different from what Thaman has worked in his career and as NTR said, we can never imagine anyone to do a better job than what Thaman did for ASVR. He literally is one of the top 3 reasons for the success of the film. Who can forget his little gem - Reddamma Thalli.

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’s album is the most wholesome of Telugu Cinema in this decade so far. Thaman has given his best for this film and quoted that this is the only film that gave him the kick for doing some great work. The global popularity of the songs like Buttabomma and Ramuloo Ramulaa speak about the talent Thaman possesses.

Final Words:

At the age of just 36, Thaman has achieved so much. He has loads of experience (more than 25 years) in the music industry and he worked with one of the legendary music directors Mani Sharma. Thaman would have been a much popular music director for the talent he has but maybe, his talent has not been utilized properly by the directors. We hope directors give him ample scope and Thaman delivers many more chartbusters in the future.
