11 Indian Film Celebrities Who Fought And Survived Cancer

All hell breaks loose when you are diagnosed or get to know that you are suffering from cancer. A few decades ago cancer meant the end of the world but now due to medical advancement, it’s far from over. Though a few times our Bollywood actors have portrayed a cancer patient on screen brilliantly but in real life, it shatters you and your family. Despite getting diagnosed with cancer some of our Bollywood celebs managed to fight it out and survive the killer ailment. A few names of our Bollywood celebs who battled cancer and came out triumphs are listed below.
 

(Note: Though cricketer Yuvraj Singh and music director Aadesh Shrivastava have also been cancer survivors but we haven’t considered them in the list as the former never acted in any Bollywood flick and the latter did survive the dreaded disease for a while but eventually succumb to it in 2015.)

  1. Gautami

    Gautami Tadimalla who was more prominent in South Indian movies than Bollywood had appeared in films like ‘Trimurti’, ‘Aadmi’, ‘God And Gun’, too struggled with breast cancer. The actress who overcame the disease made a return to films subsequently. Currently, she actively participates in several cancer-related awareness programs and continues to share her experiences with people in India as well as abroad.

  2. Manisha Koirala

    One of Bollywood’s cancer survivors was ‘Dil Se’ fame actress, Manisha Koirala. Manisha’s cancer was diagnosed after she fell unconscious in 2012 and later was admitted in a city hospital. After some tests, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She underwent surgery in the following month and battled the ailment by coming out on top. The recovery took her almost a couple of years in New York during which she posted some of her chemo sessions. The actress made a comeback to the silver screen thereafter.

  3. Lisa Ray

    The Canadian-born Lisa Ray, who made headlines when she appeared in the early 90’s in a commercial donning a high-cut swimsuit. The model-turned-actress who appeared in films like ‘Hanste Khelte’, ‘Kasoor’, ‘Water’, ‘Bollywood Hollywood’ and the recently released ‘Veerappan’, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (a cancer of plasma cells) cancer type in 2009. Though she chose to keep mum about it but bravely battled it out to tell her cancer story to others.

  4. Anurag Basu

    Another incredible Bollywood’s cancer story is that of writer-director Anurag Basu who was almost in a hopeless cancer stage when doctors gave him just two months to live. It was in 2004 when he was filming the Emraan Hashmi starrer, ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, that he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia – a type of blood cancer. The ‘Jagga Jasoos’ director didn’t give up and fought it out to come out as a winner.

    Very few know that yesteryear Bollywood diva, Mumtaz is a breast cancer survivor as well. The legendary actress who started her Bollywood acting career as a child artist with ‘Sone Ki Chidiya’ was diagnosed with a malignant lump in her breasts in early 2000. Despite having breast cancer she decided to fight and undergo several chemo sessions before becoming free of it at the age of 54. A few years later the actress quoted in an interview saying, "I don't give up easily. Even death will have to fight me.”

  6. Namrata Singh Gujral

    The lesser known Indian-American actress, Namrata Singh Gujral who has worked in a few US sitcoms had played a small role in the Sanjay Gupta action thriller, ‘Kaante’ (2002). In 2008, Namrata was diagnosed with early stages of breast cancer. She never gave up hope and decided to fight it out. It took her a while before she underwent treatment and got completely cured of it. Being a cancer survivor she decided to direct a few docu-dramas on women affected by breast cancer.

    Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue appeared as a guest singer in an A.R. Rahman composition, ‘Chiggy Wiggy’ in ‘Blue’ which starred Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Katrina Kaif. The pop singer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 but fought hard to get rid of it. She made a comeback with ‘Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour’ and continues to spread awareness about it through her programs.

    Not many know that actress Barbara Mori who appeared opposite Hrithik Roshan in ‘Kites’ some years back is also a cancer survivor. It was much before the commencement of the shoot when she encountered the dreaded disease and soon recovered from it. It was during the making of ‘Kites’ that Barbara and director Anurag Basu bonded big time as both were cancer survivors.

    Mamtha Mohandas debuted her acting career as a cancer patient, but least did we know that she would be one in real life too. Mamta was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2010 , a cancer that affects the body’s lymph nodes. Ironically, she also received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in that same year. The actress battled her illness through innumerable odds, mentally and psychologically. It was only in the year 2015, she successfully emerged as a winner and is now back into movies proving her mettle.

    Many of us aren’t aware that cricketer Yuvraj Singh has acted before the camera for a few Punjabi films. After India emerged victorious in the 2011 World Cup, the news that saddened every cricket fan was when it was reported that Yuvraj Singh was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left lung. After going through rigorous chemotherapy, the all-rounder was sent home in April 2012, where he returned to the Indian team. The spirit and strength he showed during this phase moved his fans and only got everyone praying for him. Yuvraj returned as a stronger individual and also documented his journey with the book: ‘The Test of My Life : From Cricket to Cancer and Back’
