Remaking a movie or taking inspiration from a movie is not a new concept. In the field of cinema, presenting the same story in different language has been a practice that existed from the 1960s itself. It was like a ‘give and take’ policy across the industries in India. We had the stories, a few industries and of course the audience who were never hesitant in getting entertained. This way cinema has become an integral part of India. Though legends in each industries had their own expertise to have become what they are right now, they were never hesitant in remaking if they came across a great story. In Telugu cinema, from NTR, ANR, Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna to the recent Naga Chaitanya or Ram Charan, everyone has their own style of acting and market. But, they always came forward when they liked a story from any other industry. So, let’s take a look at those times when the biggest legend of Telugu cinema, NTR stepped into the shoes of Bollywood’s biggest legend, Amitabh Bachchan.

  1. Naa Desam (1982) – Laawaris (1981)

The Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman starrer was a blockbuster in Hindi. The story of an orphan who wants to have an identity was remade in Telugu as Naa Desam. It starred NTR and Jayasudha in the lead roles. This was the time when NTR started to campaign for his political party and apparently this movie was wrapped in 19 days.

The famous Bollywood brother saga, Suhaag that starred Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor was remade into Telugu as Satyam Shivam. NTR and ANR were the stars in place and the movie was directed by K Raghavendra Rao while Sridevi and Rati Agnihotri were the leading ladies.

  3. Yugandhar (1979) – Don (1978)

One of the biggest hits in Amitabh’s career was Don. This gangster thriller was remade into almost all the South Indian languages. In Telugu, it was NTR who reprised Amitabh’s double role as Yugandhar. Directed by KSR Das, Jayasudha was the leading lady in this flick and surprisingly the music was scored by Ilayaraja.

Another blockbuster of Amitabh Bachchan, Khoon Pasina also starred Vinod Khanna. In Telugu, while NTR stepped into Amitabh’s shoes, it was Rajini Kanth who took up Vinod Khanna’s role. This also marked Rajin Kanth’s 50 th movie and the only movie to have acted alongside NTR.

‘Do Anjaane’ was a super hit in Amitabh Bachchan’s career which also starred Rekha as the leading lady. The movie that deals with the life of a man who loses his memory in a fatal accident has some amazing performance by the leading pair. This was remade in Telugu with NTR and Vanisri as ‘Maavari Manchitanam’ and directed by BA Subbarao.
