2016 Report Card Of The Top Stars Of Mollywood

Another year has ended. 2016 for Malayalam film industry was a mixed one. The year took off on the back of previous year’s Christmas releases and other than a handful of movies, nothing tasted success in the first half. The second half gifted us the “baap of all movies”, Pulimurugan, which made it clear that even Malayalam films can get into the coveted 100 crores and 150 crores club. But, sadly the year ended with a cinema strike, which killed the Christmas season business. So, when another year has left us behind, we feel, it’s time to check the progress report of the top actors of Malayalam. And that’s what we are doing here, analyzing 2016 of the top film stars.

[NB: This is strictly not a judgment call on who is the best actor in 2016. That we will be doing in the coming days. This is only a critical narration of the Mollywood heroes relating only to their films of 2016.]

  • Mammootty

Megastar Mammootty came in front of the audience with 4 films, in 2016. He started the year with the female-centric movie, Puthiya Niyamam. It won’t be wrong to say that Nayantara was the real hero in this film. The movie opened to positive critic reviews but failed to do great business at the box office. Police movie, Kasaba, was his second film. Owing to the huge pre-release hype the movie broke all the releasing day collection records, till then. But the lack of a good story and the over hype backfired and it ended being just a hit. The same month, megastar came with a romantic movie, after a long time. White, which was the debut of Huma Qureshi in Malayalam, was a disaster among critics and at the box-office. Next and the final Mammootty movie of 2016 was Thoppil Joppan, which was an Onam release. Though the movie had nothing in new and was bland comedy flick, because of the festive season, the movie ended up being a hit. In overall, 2016 for Mammootty and his fans didn't offer anything great to keep in memories.

  • Mohanlal

The year 2016 turned out to be the one which Superstar Mohanlal was looking for a long time. He was able to impress both critics and audience alike, and that too with all his 2016 releases. The complete actor had two Malayalam and two Telugu movies this year. First Mohanlal movie of 2016 was the Telugu movie, Manamantha (Vismayam in Malayalam) in August, as there was no film for the star in the first half. The film was a big success among the critics from Kerala as well as the Telugu speaking states. His second movie, Janatha Garage, went on to become the highest grosser among Telugu movies in 2016. And both the movies were able to make a break even collection in Kerala with its dubbed versions. Then came the Onam movie, Oppam. And it went on to become the clear Onam winner at the box office and a blockbuster, which was well appreciated by the critics. Then on October 21, Pulimurugan was released. And as they say, the rest is history. In the final tally, 2016 was one of the best years of Mohanlal’s 37-year long career and a proof for the fact that he is among the top best actors in Indian cinema.

  • Dileep

Janapriyanayakan Dileep had his first release of 2016 in April. King Liar, directed by Lal, went to become a blockbuster. This happened despite the movie getting average to bad reviews. For his second release of the year, Dileep shifted from his usual track of comedy entertainer and took over a serious role in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s movie Pinneyum. This film saw the super hit Dileep - Kavya jodi back together on the screen. It went down well with the critics and got mixed to positive reviews. But Pinneyum was a no-show at the Box Office and ended up as a big time flop. Then was Dileep’s Onam release, Welcome To Central Jail. The movie went on to be a big commercial success, as it was marked as a super hit at the box office. But critically speaking the film was an utter waste. This is one of those very few Dileep movies for which you can’t sit till the end. So, while calling on the overall performance of the Janapriyanayakan in 2016, we can say that he kept his market value almost intact but nothing more than that.

  • Jayaram

Well, this will be very short. Jayaram had just one release in 2016. It was the horror movie, Aadupuliyattam, which was released in May. Due to the poor performance of his recent movies, there wasn’t any big expectation from this flick. But, to everyone’s surprise, the audience liked the movie and it went on to become one of the hits of 2016. This was the last movie of veteran Bollywood actor Om Puri in Malayalam. So, as to conclude, Jayaram had a fairly better 2016 than the previous few years. Though he is yet to gain back his whole stardom, it seems that he is on the right path to it.

  • Prithviraj

After an amazing 2015, Young Superstar Prithviraj started the year with Paavada. This was also the first release of a top star in 2016. The movie was well received by the audience and the critics also gave it a thumbs up, and it went on to be the first super hit of 2016. The second release for Prithvi was Darvinte Parinamam, which got a mixed to negative review from critics. The film also failed to gain audience attraction and went on to be a flop. Same was the fate of his next release, James & Alice. There is nothing to talk about both these movies. Next and final of 2016 for Prithvi was Jeethu Joseph’s revenge drama, Oozham. Yes, the movie is among the super hits of the year, but that is totally because it was released during the biggest festive season of Onam. On a critical analyze of the movie, it was a very dry and a worn out movie which re-tells a story that has been told a million times. On the whole, 2016 definitely wasn’t as good as 2015 for Prithvi, but it wasn’t a worse one either. He was about to hold his ground.

  • Jayasurya

Versatile actor Jayasurya entered 2016 after having a brilliant 2015. In this year he had four releases. Rosshan Andrrews movie School Bus, Sajid Yahiya’s IDI, Boban Samuel’s Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum and Ranjith Shankar’s Pretham. Among the four, only Pretham was able to impress the audience and the critics. He proved his meat as an actor and a star in this movie. While Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum turned out to be something not even worth a discussion, the other two just missed that line by a hairline margin. It is true that Jayasurya had four different kinds of character in these four movies.

  • Kunchacko Boban

Kunchacko Boban had five releases in 2016. And only one among them, Vettah, was able to gain any ground at the box office. Rest of the four movies, Shajahanum Pareekuttiyum, School Bus, Valliyum Thetti Pulliyum Thetti and Kochavva Paulo Ayyappa Coelho, were disasters at the box office. Still, KPAC was a movie which was very well accepted by the critics. For Kunchacko 2016 also wasn’t a great year. Commercially his market value sunk further but through his performance in Vettah and KPAC, he proved that the actor in him still has more to offer.

  • Fahadh Faasil

Fahadh Faasil is regarded as the best actor among the young generation actors. And this was solidified with his performance in Dileesh Pothen’s Maheshinte Prethikaaram. This movie, which was released with zero hype, won the hearts of all and gave the much-needed success for Fahadh. But the first movie of his in 2016 was not something that any fan of him would love to remember. Mansoon Mangoes which was released in January was so quick in its journey of in and out of theaters, that many didn’t even notice its release. With just 2 movies in 2016, Fahadh had a 50:50 success ratio, both commercially and critically. And if he needs to improve his value as both an actor and a star, then he needs to give more movies like Maheshinte Prethikaaram.

  • Dulquer Salmaan

Gennext Megastar Dulquer Salmaan had two movies in 2016, Sameer Thahir’s Kali and Rajeev Ravi’s Kammatipaadam. Both the movies were a success at the box office and among the critics and clearly showed his progress as an actor, and also the versatility that he is trying to get in his characters. Kali proved that he can easily carry characters which are based on strong emotions. Dulquer proved his steel in Kammatipaadam and along with the spectacular performance of Vinayakan and Manikandan, he took the movie into the coveted category of 'cult classics'. In total, Dulquer had an amazing year which yet again proved that he is here for the long run because of his talent and not due to his father’s name.

  • Nivin Pauly

2016 for Nivin Pauly is the year that made him the Prince of Kerala Box Office. Nivin had two films, Abrid Shine’s Action Hero Biju and Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Jacobinte Swargarajyam. Both the movies were big time success at the box office and helped to increase his star value. AHB had a slow initial but pulled up due to word of mouth. But Jacobinte Swargarajyam was a sure shot at gold from the go. Though both the movies didn’t match the Premam wave, they were able to give really good returns to the producers. Also considering his previous years, Nivin has emerged as the most bankable actor among the new generation stars.

  • Asif Ali

Asif Ali hadn’t had a big commercial success in recent times. And his look out for that ended in 2016, with Anuraga Karikkin Vellam. The movie came as a breathing break after a series of flops, which included his first movie of the year, Ithu Thaanda Police. AKV went on to become a sleeper hit and the return of Asif Ali to the limelight. After that came Kavi Uddeshichathu..? which was welcomed with a mixed response from the critics. But, the movie was able to make some initial collection at the box office. Yet, it failed to continue the momentum and ended up as an average hit. Considering the overall performance of Asif Ali, we can safely say that 2016 was the year of resurgence for the actor.
