10 Bollywood Celebrities Who Fought And Won Against Depression

Celebrities in India are loved, and in some cases even worshipped by people. They have next to no personal life as everything they do, wear and say becomes a sensational news item. Sometimes, though, we forget that these celebrities are human beings too who go through problems similar to us. In a country where mental illness is not given much importance, these celebrities bring light to this important topic by talking and being open about their own experience with depression. Here is a list of 10 Indian Celebrities who overcame depression and openly spoke about it:

(Note: We have considered only Bollywood celebrities who battled and won against depression and omitted the likes of Jiah Khan and Parveen Babi from the list as they succumbed to depression and loneliness.)
 

  1. Shahrukh Khan

    The ‘Baadshah’ of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan who had started his career from television also suffered from depression after having a shoulder injury in 2008. The actor underwent surgery after tearing a ligament in his shoulder while shooting. This, and the fact that he was being compared to every other actor caused him to go into depression but he successfully overcame it and is now considered to be one of the biggest stars in the world.

  2. Deepika Padukone

    Yes, Deepika Padukone too suffered from depression in 2014 due to stress. She tried to surround herself by people to distract herself but it did not help. It was after she spoke to her mother’s friend, Anna Chandy who is a psychologist, found out about the root of the problem. Deepika was advised to take medication but was reluctant, so she spoke to Dr. Shyam Bhatt in Bengaluru for counselling. It helped for a while but she had to take medication to completely get over it. The actress is now working on spreading awareness about Depression and Anxiety.

  3. Dharmendra

    It is a lesser known fact that Veeru from Sholay battled with depression for 15 years and became addicted to alcohol to try and get over his mental disorder. He finally accepted in 2011 that alcohol has only made his condition worse and quit drinking. He is trying to live a happier life after that.

    The actor who entered Bollywood with two consecutive hits, Heropanti and Baaghi, went into depression after his third film A Flying Jatt bombed at the box office. He believed he had worked hard on the film and the reviews it received made him feel very sad. He suffered through “hardcore depression” for a month and got over it only after finishing the first schedule of his next film Munna Michael.

    Ileana has been with Anxiety, Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Depression for almost 15 years now. After Deepika Padukone admitted to have a mental illness, this actress too opened up about her mental illness in an interview. She gives great emphasis to seeking help and accepting the mental illness just like any other illness.

He lost his mother Nargis Dutt when he was young, lost his wife Richa Sharma to cancer and spent 18 months in prison after the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. This Bollywood actor battled with depression when he was re-imprisoned in 2013. It was also reported that the actor was unable to sleep during his jail term.

    Manisha Koirala also suffered from depression because of her relationship with her ex- husband Samrat Dahal and her battle against Cancer. She has publicly admitted to have taken medical help and is now completely over it and has made her return into Bollywood.

    Honey Singh disappeared from the music scene for 18 months without talking to anyone when he was at the peak of his career. He came out on his birthday in 2016 to tell the media that he was suffering from bipolar disorder and that he was an alcoholic, which only made the condition worse. During his absence, there were many rumours about the singer but he denied all of them, claiming he needed to be away from the media for a while.
