A Bengali will always wait for Durga Puja. Overshadowing the religious part of the event, it has become a celebration of life that make the Bongs have the most delicious food, look the finest, and watch the best movies during this time. The experts and rulers of the film industry are well aware of the Bengali mind and thus do everything in their full power to utilize the opportunity to give their best shot at this time of the year. In previous years, we have seen their trick worked perfectly as films released in this festive season enjoyed huge success at the box office. From Sudhu Tomari Jonyo to Byomkesh Bakshi, from Rajkahini to Prem Amar - we listed down 15 movies of different flavors that released in Puja and went on to become blockbusters.

  1. Ek Je Chhilo Raja (2018)

    Srijit Mukherjee's Ek Je Chhilo Raja released with great hype and this time, director Srijit Mukherjee didn't disappoint his fans. The historical drama received thumbs up from the critics and the reflection could be seen at the box-office. Jisshu Sengupta's impeccable performance helped the film to become the highest grosser of the year beating all the biggies that released in Puja 2018.

  2. Byomkesh Gowtro (2018)

    Byomkesh Bakshi returned on the silver screen in 2018 during Durga Puja. This time, instead of Anjan Dutta, Arindam Sil's Byomkesh Gowtro hit the screen and emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year. Audience enjoyed watching Abir as Byomkesh Bakshi and Arjun Chakraborty's performance in the negative role.

  3. Byomkesh O Agnibaan (2017)

    Byomkesh O Agnibaan featuring Jisshu Sengupta and Saswata Chatterjee as Byomkesh and Ajit was one of the most successful films in 2017. Anjan Dutta made the last installment of his Byomkesh series merging two Byomkesh stories - 'Uposonghar' and 'Agnibaan' by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay into one movie. No wonder, like any other Byomkesh film, this one was a huge hit.

  4. Yeti Obhijaan (2017)

    One more time, director Srijit Mukherjee managed to deliver a box-office hit while the critic reviews didn't go in the favor of the adventure film. Based on Sunil Ganguly's Paharchuray Atonko, the flick saw Kakababu and Santu getting back in action after Mishwar Rohoshyo.

    Despite the negative reviews, Srijit Mukherjee's Zulfiqar, a Bengali screen adaptation of  Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, became a huge hit at the box-office.     Although a remake of popular Tamil movie 'Raja Rani', the audience loved the growing and changing shades of love and life in this Dev, Srabanti, Mimi, and Soham starrer film. Directed by Birsa Dasgupta, the film released in 211 theatres and went on to become the highest-grosser of the year collecting an estimate of six Crores at the box office. Also, who can forget the exhilarating melody 'Egiye De' that became the musical sensation of the year.

    During Puja, the Goddess of box office offered her blessings to Srijit Muherjee once again and the film hit the jackpot without any struggle. The film starts with four directors joining hands to deliver a movie, but an unpredictable twist awaits for the audience. The surprise element worked in favor of the makers and 'Chatuskone' gained money as well as won the dirctor several awards including National Award for Best Direction among others.

    Srijit Mukherjee once again claimed the crown as he shifted his camera on Bengali's favorite Kakababu and Shantu and transformed their spine-chilling adventure from the words to the world of the silver screen. Prosenjit as Raja Roy Choudhury A.K.A Kakababu, the crutch wielding sleuth cum adventurer hit the bull's eye that earned the producer a whopping Rs 7crore-plus collection. Indraneil Sengupta's performance as an Egyptian rebel stayed with us for long.

  12. Rangbaaz (2013)

    Stunning location of Thailand, deadly stunts, jumping from a 44-storey building in Bangkok, hanging from a chopper - this Dev and Koel starrer main-stream flick had it all. Produced by Nishpal Singh Rane, ‘Rangbaaz’ was an out-and-out commercial drama that did great business in the sub-urbs and small town areas. As per the production house, the movie collected 9 crores at the box office.

    Again Srijit win the box-office in 2011 with an unnerving psychological thriller. Abhijit Pakrashi, the young police officer consulted ex-cop Prabir when a serial killer started slaughtering around Kolkata. The killer picked his kill randomly and left couplets from Bengali poems to tease the investigators. A thriller that penetrates the several layers of the human psyche was disturbing yet entertaining enough to turn out as the biggest hit of 2011 Puja.

  14. Autograph (2010)

    'Autograph' marked the debut of Srijit Mukherjee the director and introduced a novel phase of Bangla cinema, which successfully brought the urban audience back in the cinemas. The movie was a tribute to Satyajit Roy's 'Nayak' where Prosenjit plays Arun Chatterjee, a superstar with a vulnerable side. The movie also gave Tollywood Anupam Roy, whose 'Amake Amar Moto Thakte Dao' became the new-gen Bong anthem and the rest are what they say a glorious history.

Inspired by Telugu film ‘Gamyam’, the road movie revolves around a life changing journey of a rich brat Rahul and Shibu, a bike thief who travels together in search of someone. The simple yet poignant tale of self-revelation powered by solid performances touched numerous hearts and made business at the same time.
