Malayalam film industry has been blessed with a pool of talent which has been instrumental in ensuring technical quality of films in not just Malayalam, but in Hindi, Tamil, Hollywood and Telugu. Directors, actors, editors, art designers and sound designers from Malayalam are sought after all over India. Well, the name of Resul Pookkutty, is one name enough to prove that. After all he won an (the first Indian to) Oscar for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. From KS Sethumadhavan who created a storm in Bollywood with his ‘Julie’ (1975) to ‘Wazir’ (2016) director Bejoy Nambiar, the list is long. Here we are talking about ten of the most famous Malayalam directors and actors who made a mark in the Hindi Film industry.

  • Dulquer Salman

Dulquer Salman (DQ) has never dwelt on his superstar father Mammootty's image. He had made a mark for himself in the industry through his effortless acting and lovable roles. Karwaan marks the debut of Mollywood heartthrob Dulquer Salman in Bollywood. Dulquer plays Avinash,a depressed IT employee in this light-hearted comedy which has tickled the funny bones. DQ has portrayed Avinash effectively just as he had nailed his roles in Malayalam films.

  • Priyadarshan

Priyadarshan has done a record 31 films in Hindi alone. That is a staggering number of films for a non-Hindi director. Priyan started his Bollywood career with Muskurahat (1992), which was a remake of his own Kilukkam (1991) which starred Mohanlal. Though his first movie bombed, he made a strong comeback with Gardish in 1993, starring Jackie Shroff. The film was a huge hit and started a string of Hindi movies from Priyan. Many of his films are remakes of hit Malayalam films and has turned out to be huge hits at the box office. Some of the most memorable comedies in Bollywood including Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhaag, etc.

  • Mohanlal

Regarded as one of the best actors alive in India today, Mohanlal’s filmography somewhat resembles the list of ‘Best Malayalam films’. The actor has also made a stellar presence in Bollywood too. His first movie in Hindi was the gangster classic, Company (2002). He starred in the film as Sreenivasan IPS, Commissioner of Police. A big star cast including Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, Manisha Koirala and Seema Biswas were present in the film. But Mohanlal’s performance as the soft spoken police commissioner was remarkably different from the exaggerated loud and hysterical cop roles Bollywood had seen then. He starred in two more films later, Aag and Tezz, though both did not fare well at the box office.

Be it ‘Azhagan’, ‘Kandukondein Kandukondein’ and ‘Thalapathy’ in Tamil, ‘Swathy Kiranam’ in Telugu etc. He has done three films in Bollywood – ‘Triyathri’ (1990), ‘Dhartiputra’ (1993) and ‘Sau Jhoot Ek Sach’ (2005). But he is most remembered for ‘Baba Saheb Ambedkar’ which was released in many languages including English, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil.
